How much and when to irrigate the wisteria

Wisteria is a climbing plant. It does not need to be watered too often, since it is the first phase of life to get wet more frequently. During the summer period or if there should be periods of drought, instead, it is better to make sure that you also irrigate every day. Sandy soils have difficulty retaining moisture, in this case it becomes essential to intervene with frequent watering. Flowering occurs with the advent of summer and lasts for more than a month. If flowering is poor, check the amount of water administered and that it has a correct exposure. Avoid the water jet directly on the shoots, essential for not damaging them, as for most plants, it is necessary to avoid the formation of water stagnations that cause root rot.

How to cultivate and treat wisteria

To grow wisteria, it must be planted in spring. You take a pair of stems and make sure to weave them together and on the support. Once they reach one meter in height, they will join together, creating a solid single trunk. Once the right height is reached, supports are provided for the branches, which in the initial phase must be guided. At the same time the branches must be pruned so that they can be strengthened. Pruning helps to form other germinations that thicken the hair. Subsequently, the branches will become woody and then the supports can be removed. To enlarge the foliage, it will be necessary to help the terminal germination little by little, following the growth. Be sure to keep the horizontal branches.

How and when to fertilize wisteria

Once the summer season is over, it is necessary to collect the dry foliage of the plant and it is necessary to fertilize it with a fertilizer of mineral origin, possibly without nitrogen. This is to avoid a possible attack by active pests during this period. Moreover, the wisteria manages to take nitrogen from the ground autonomously, fixing it. So to add it, it would damage the flowering, preferring instead the overgrowth of the foliage. One of the most appreciated forms for wisteria, if cultivated in the vase, is the umbrella type, which provides a pleasant aesthetic. To obtain a healthy plant, it is necessary to fertilize it at least twice a year. Fertilizing it is really important and you have to do it regularly, to get a luxuriant growth.

Wisteria: exposure, diseases and possible remedies

The wisteria plant prefers the sun even if it survives in shady areas which, however, delay the flowering that will be much smaller. It is possible to plant it in the whole Italian territory up to a thousand meters of altitude. Wisteria is very resistant, but can be affected by some diseases and parasites. Frequently there are aphids and red spiders that damage the wisteria. To remedy this problem, specific pesticides can be used. A frequent problem is the fungi that produce whitish spots. However, they do not create particularly important damages except that they do not hit the trunk, in this situation the ruined timber must be removed and it is necessary to spread some fungicide paste. This usually solves the problem.
