Main features of the white anthurium
The white anthurium arrived in the European continent a few decades ago directly from the rainforests of Latin America. It belongs to the large Araceae family and is a herbaceous plant. There are over five hundred varieties, appreciated for the elegance of the flowers called spate and the shine of the leaves. Those that are commonly called flowers, are inflorescences comparable to those of the calla lilies: they have a central spadix wrapped in a shiny heart-shaped bract. The plant has a bushy appearance that rarely exceeds fifty centimeters in diameter. Nurseries have many hybrid varieties to choose from. The inflorescences are also marketed as cut flowers because once detached from the mother plant, they have a long life.
Anthurium at home
The white anthurium does not withstand average temperatures below 10 ° C. It is better to place it away from cold currents inside an apartment. Place the plant in a sunny area but out of reach of direct sunlight. So that you can stay healthy, take periodic spaced waterings. Before irrigating, check the soil to make sure it is completely dry. The roots fear water stagnation and excessive humidity could seriously affect them. The damaged leaves and faded flowers must be removed to prevent them from absorbing precious energy. If you notice the presence of many yellowed leaves it means that it has been watered excessively or that it needs to be adequately fertilized.
Periodic treatment to be performed
To get a white anthurium luxuriant and free of defects, it is advisable to repot it every two years. Choose a more capacious pot than the previous one and add to the soft soil of the stable manure now to allow the plant to grow better. To obtain a more water-permeable soil, add pozzolana or, alternatively, pumice stone. In nature they do not root in the soil but sink their roots into the decomposed plant remains like orchids. For this reason it is possible to use the soil that is commonly purchased to make the orchids thrive in agrarian consortia. The plants must be buried up to the collar and then watered with a little water so as to compact the soil around the roots and favor their engraftment.
White Anthurium: Temperatures and exposure
Wild anthurium species live in the equatorial belt and are part of the vegetation present in the rainforests. They are particularly sensitive to cold and with temperatures that drop below 13 ° C they start to have different problems risking to perish quickly. The perfect temperature to get beautiful blooms is around eighteen degrees. The changes in temperature are particularly harmful and risk causing the plant to suffer with unpleasant consequences. As for sun exposure, it is best to keep them in a bright place but away from direct sunlight. To recreate a suitable environment you can shield the window panes with light-colored curtains. In this way they will receive the right amount of light at all times of the day.
